By Jessica on August 11, 2022 YA review, young adult

This month, Agate Publishing is launching a new collection called In Their Own Words: Young Reader Edition. Starting with Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Michelle Obama, these books on influential women feature direct quotes curated from public statements.

Geared at students in grades 7 to 12, these books feature a wide range of topics including, community building; equality; life lessons; America; and making change.

Each book contains a detailed timeline of milestones in each woman’s career. Also included are a glossary for vocabulary, editorial notes, an additional resources list, and free online educator materials.

RUTH BADER GINSBURG: IN HER OWN WORDS: YOUNG READER EDITION, by Helena Hunt, Agate B2, Aug. 9, 2022, Hardcover, $15.95 (young adult)

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second woman to serve as Supreme Court justice.

This collection of quotes has been curated from Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s numerous public statements — interviews, court opinions, oral arguments from her time as a lawyer, speeches, and more. It’s a comprehensive picture of her legacy and her impact on American history, specifically geared toward middle and high school readers. The quotes in the collection touch on equality, the law, feminism, the United States justice system, education, and more. This edition includes educational materials and resources for lesson plans designed to provoke discussion and thought for readers in grades 7-12 about Ginsburg’s ideas. —Synopsis provided by Agate B2

MICHELLE OBAMA: IN HER OWN WORDS: YOUNG READER EDITION, by Marta Evans and Hannah Masters, Agate B2, Aug. 9, 2022, Hardcover, $15.95 (young adult)

Michelle Obama is an author, lawyer and humanitarian. She served as the first Black Frist Lady of the United States.

This collection of quotes has been curated from Michelle Obama’s numerous public statements — interviews, books, social media posts, television appearances, and more. It’s a comprehensive picture of her legacy as one of America’s most recognizable and influential women, specifically geared toward middle and high school readers. The quotes in the collection touch on education, friendship and community, life lessons, America, the role of First Lady, making change, inequality and injustice, and more. This edition includes educational materials and resources for lesson plans designed to provoke discussion and thought for readers in grades 7-12 about Michelle Obama’s ideas. —Synopsis provided by Agate B2

At face value, these are quote books. But if you look a little closer, you see that each quote has been carefully selected to fit within the provided framework. They aren’t just quotes thrown around. Rather, they are quotes selected to provide a bigger picture.

Each of the books in this collection follow the same format: A table of contents followed by an introduction; three parts featuring anywhere from three to six chapters; milestones; glossary; additional resources; and acknowledgments. Beyond that, editorial notes and definitions are sprinkled throughout, providing context where needed.

In Their Own Words: Young Reader Edition offers teenagers a clear and accessible look at women who have changed our society. The only thing missing from these books are photographs that might add even more context. Overall, these are fascinating and informative reads that could be of great use on a personal level as well as in the classroom.
