Mini Review: Wonder Dogs! celebrates pooches big and small

By Jessica on March 16, 2023 ages 3 & up, picture books
WONDER DOGS! by Linda Ashman and Karen Obuhanych, Atheneum Books for Young Readers, Feb. 28, 2023, Hardcover, $18.99, (ages 4-8)

Celebrate dogs and all their abilities — big and small — in Wonder Dogs! by Linda Ashman and Karen Obuhanych.

    THEY’RE WONDER DOGS!
    They catch and carry,
    Search and save,
    Inspect and guide—
    They’re smart and brave!

Next to these amazing dogs, everyday pooches like Butters might not look like much — he drools, he sheds, he hogs the bed. But he also listens close, and keeps us warm, and offers comfort in a storm. He’s a wonder dog, too, and his superpower is loving you! —Synopsis provided by Atheneum Books for Young Readers

This gentle ode to dogs will resonate with every kid who has a special pet. Kids will immediately recognize all the amazing things many dogs can do, especially being there when their owners need them most.

Wonder Dogs! unfolds in such a way that kids get to see a large variety of dogs and their habitats. Linda Ashman’s bouncy text is fun to read aloud and Karen Obuhanych’s illustrations are bright and full of humor. This book should appeal to a large cross-section of readers.
