Laura Gehl & Sonia Sánchez’s Snow Is… is a joyful read

By Jessica on November 5, 2024 ages 4 & up, picture books

SNOW IS…, by Laura Gehl and Sonia Sánchez, Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, Oct. 29, 2024, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)

Enjoy the wonderful things that are associated with snow in Snow Is…, written by Laura Gehl and illustrated by Sonia Sánchez.

It’s dawn and there is snow all around. The wonder of winter’s first snowfall brings the magic of changing seasons and sees a family sharing the perfect snow day with coziness and togetherness from dawn to dusk. —Synopsis provided by Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books

We saw our first snow flurries where I live this past weekend, and the realization that the season is changing truly sunk in. With that in mind, Snow Is… has definitely helped get our family in the mood for the fluffy white stuff.

Author Laura Gehl hits it out of the park with lovely bouncy imagery that’s a pleasure to read aloud. Her sparse, but delightful, text serves as the framework for illustrator Sonia Sánchez’s energetic artwork. Sánchez’s limited palette enhances the feeling of a snowy day. And her use of red really makes the action pop.

Snow Is… is a joyful read that captures the magic of a new snow.
