By Jessica on February 10, 2025 ages 4 & up, nonfiction, picture books

ALPACAS HERE, ALPACAS THERE, by Carrie Tillotson and Elisa Chavarri, Beach Lane Books, Feb. 11, 2025, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

Learn all about alpacas in both North and South America in Alpacas Here, Alpacas There, by Carrie Tillotson and Elisa Chavarri.

Alpacas here, alpacas there depend on people for their care.

Thousands of years ago, people living high in the Andes Mountains of South America domesticated alpacas from wild animals. Today, millions of alpacas are still raised in the Andes, but alpaca farming has also spread to North America and around the world. Find out all there is to know about the lives of alpacas, here, there, and everywhere! —Synopsis provided by Beach Lane Books

Alpacas Here, Alpacas There is almost like two books in one. The first features lovely rhythmic text. And the second, longer paragraphs that go further in depth about alpaca social and physical attributes. Author Carrie Tillotson’s treatment of the text broadens the audience and grows with readers as they become more independent.

Artist Elisa Chavarri’s acrylic gouache illustrations have a lovely texture. Bright colors and inviting alpacas will hold interest.

This cheerful book also features notes from both author and illustrator, and endnotes that include more about alpacas and a glossary.

Alpacas Here, Alpacas There is a fun nonfiction picture book perfect at home or in the classroom.
