SUNNY FIGURES IT OUT: A Graphic Novel (Sunny #6), by Jennifer L. Holm, Matthew Holm, Graphix, July 1, 2025, Paperback, $12.99 (ages 8-12)
A girl tries to figure out what happens when a boy stops being just a friend and starts being a boyfriend, and what that means for both of them in Sunny Figures it Out, by Jennifer L. Holm, Matthew Holm.
There’s no question that Sunny has fun whenever she hangs out with Tony. They go to the movies together, talk a lot at school, and support each other when they need it.
But are they dating?
Sunny isn’t sure… but her friend, Deb, is. She thinks Sunny and Tony should be doing the couples-skate at the local roller rink. And Tony should be giving Sunny his jacket to wear. And carrying her books to class.
For Sunny, this doesn’t feel great. It just feels… weird. Maybe she needs to stop taking everyone else’s advice in order to figure things out for herself! —Synopsis provided by Graphix
Sunny Figures It Out is the sixth book in Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm’s Sunny series, but that didn’t stop my 11-year-old from jumping straight in. And by the time she was finished, my kid was asking for the previous five books.
I honestly didn’t think my kid would like Sunny Figures It Out because of the subject matter. (Said kid thinks kissing and holding hands is gross.) But it’s the authors’ approach to boyfriend/girlfriend issues that snagged her attention.
In Sunny Figures It Out Sunny stays true to herself and learns that things are best when she does what’s right for her and not other people. This is perfect for tweens who are maturing at different rates.
My kid also loved the illustrations and the overall design of the graphic novel. It’s a big thumbs up from our house.
