Celebrate mindfulness and Day of the Dead with This Moment Is Special

By Jessica on July 26, 2025 ages 4 & up, Hispanic Heritage, picture books

THIS MOMENT IS SPECIAL: A Día de Muertos Story (Day of the Dead), by John Parra, Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books, July 15, 2025, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

A boy prepares for a Day of the Dead celebration in This Moment Is Special, written and illustrated by John Parra.

A single day in a boy’s life is filled with family, love, and inspiration as he prepares for the Día de Muertos celebration and remembers that all moments are special. Each moment reminds us of our family and those who have gone before us. Today holds a special promise, una promesa especial. —Synopsis provided by Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books

This Moment Is Special is a lovely look at how little moments like learning in school, running in the rain and playing with friends are all special in their own way. And when you add all those moments up, you get many special memories.

Author-illustrator John Parra’s text is thoughtful and thought evoking. And his use of Spanish to repeat the end of each phrase is a beautiful touch. His words remind readers to live in the moment rather than rushing ahead to the next great thing.

Parra’s illustrations are colorful and inviting. His characters are friendly and full of life.

This Moment Is Special is perfect for celebrating the Day of the Dead or just to focus on mindfulness.
