Tame bedtime woes with The Dreams I’ll Dream Tonight

By Jessica on July 31, 2025 ages 4 & up, bedtime story, picture books

THE DREAMS I’LL DREAM TONIGHT, by Sarah Ruhl and Sally Deng, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

A child gets ready for bedtime by deciding to challenge his nightmares in The Dreams I’ll Dream Tonight, by Sarah Ruhl and Sally Deng.

Read just one more book to me
    The way you always do
Then I won’t dream of dragons.
    Instead, I’ll dream of you.

When bad dreams and scary things threaten a child’s peaceful sleep, they ask for one more bedtime story to fill their head with kittens, kisses, and the love they have for their family. —Synopsis provided by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, playwright, poet, and professor Sarah Ruhl invites young readers to flipping the script when it comes to bedtime dreams. Her rhythmic text is a joy to read aloud. It offers young readers hope and control over some of the scary things they face at night. Illustrator Sally Deng’s colorful artwork has a dreamlike quality to it that echoes the warm text.
