THE WISHING LEAF, by Kallie George and Paola Zakimi, Abrams Books for Young Readers, Aug. 12, 2025, Hardcover, $18.99 (Ages 3-7)
A little bear is determined to watch the last leaf fall in The Wishing Leaf, written by Kallie George and illustrated by Paola Zakimi.
Bear knows that when the last leaf falls in the forest, whatever wish you make is sure to come true! Although it’s almost time to sleep, Mama allows Bear to watch and wait with his friends.
But it seems like the leaf is never going to fall, so one by one, the other animals grow impatient and start to head home. Bear, however, finds active ways to wait, all the while wondering what to wish for—until finally, he’s the only one left, and he’s growing tired.
Will Bear see the last leaf fall? And if so, what wish will he make? —Synopsis provided by Abrams Books for Young Readers
The Wishing Leaf is a sweet story of friendship and patience.
From beginning to end, everything about The Wishing Leaf is cozy — even when the snow starts to fly. There’s something so tender about Bear’s desire that his friends should get to share his wish.
Author Kallie George captures the innocence and pure joy of childhood in her gentle story. And Paola Zakimi’s pencil, watercolor and digital characters are delightful. What a lovely way to celebrate the changing of seasons.
