MISS CAT: THE MYSTERY OF THE MELTING SNOW (MISS CAT, 3), by Jean-Luc Fromental and Joëlle Jolivet, Thames & Hudson, Sept. 2, 2025, Paperback, $12.95 (ages 6 and up)

A private detective finds herself at a ski resort where the snow melts at night and reappears in the morning in The Mystery of the Melting Snow, by Jean-Luc Fromental and Joëlle Jolivet.

Miss Cat is not your typical private detective. Whether it’s her unique fashion sense or her uncanny ability to crack mind-bending mysteries, Miss Cat never turns down a chance to solve a crime and unmask the perpetrators.

In this new Miss Cat adventure, strange things are happening in the ski resort of Snøbøll. Why does all the snow melt away at night and magically reappear the next morning? Who is Ulf Rozenupp the Snow King and why has his sweetheart Snowella gone missing? And what is pizza chef Don Deville cooking up in secret? Join Miss Cat and her friends for a Christmas case full of fire and ice!

Featuring unforgettable characters and riddles galore, Miss Cat: The Mystery of the Melting Snow will captivate readers and win new fans to this page-turning series featuring the intrepid girl detective. —Synopsis provided by Thames & Hudson

The Mystery of the Melting Snow is the third book in Jean-Luc Fromental and Joëlle Jolivet’s Miss Cat series.

My Agatha Christie-reading 11-year-old hasn’t met a mystery she doesn’t like — even when the intended audience is younger than her. She enjoyed the first two Miss Cat books — The Case of the Curious Canary and The Gnome’s Nightmare — and immediately sat down to read The Mystery of the Melting Snow when it arrived.

The books are written in a sort of hybrid style, featuring chapters and chunks of text mixed with full-color illustrations and comic-style thought and text bubbles. At less than 70 pages, The Mystery of the Melting Snow is less intimidating than other books for this age group. It plays to kid humor, and the Edward Gorey-esque illustrations draw you in.
