Rise, Girl, Rise encourages girls to create change

By Jessica on February 8, 2026 ages 4 & up, Celebrating Diversity, picture books, women's history

RISE, GIRL, RISE: OUR SISTER-FRIEND JOURNEY. TOGETHER FOR ALL., by Gloria Steinem, Leymah Gbowee, Kah Yangni, Orchard Books, Feb. 3, 2026, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

Feminist organizer Gloria Steinem and Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee share their parallel journeys as activists in Rise, Girl, Rise.

We, sister-friends, working our way toward equality’s front door. We, taking separate journeys, but walking in the same direction.

We ―― for peace. We ―― for love. We ―― for bravery.

Gloria Steinem and Leymah Gbowee’s dual paths have inspired a friendship empowered by the principles of equality, progress, and hope for a new generation. Here, two friends come together to tell one uplifting story of girls and women strengthening one another and changing the world. —Synopsis provided by Orchard Books

Rise, Girl, Rise follows Steinem and Gbowee through their childhoods as they noticed the unfairness women, girls and people of different races unfairly. That is followed by modern-day activists joining together and speaking out against injustice.

The text is phrased in a way that wants to be read aloud. It is a call to young readers to see power within themselves to create change. It’s a powerful call to action. Bright, layered illustrations echo that call with people from all walks of life represented. This book will particularly appeal to young readers who are seeking to make a difference.
