THROUGH THE TELESCOPE: MAE JEMISON DREAMS OF SPACE, by Charles R. Smith Jr. and Evening Monteiro, Orchard Books, Dec. 2, 2025, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

Explore the wonders of the universe in Through the Telescope, a poetic ode to trailblazing astronaut Mae Jemison, from Charles R. Smith, Jr. and Evening Monteiro.

    How far to the stars?

This is what a little girl named Mae Jemison wonders as she peers through her telescope and dreams of space. Someday she will make it there, but for now she wonders, learns, and is inspired by the vastness of the universe.

Astronaut, physician, and engineer Mae Jemison’s passion would eventually lead to her becoming the first Black woman in space! —Synopsis provided by Orchard Books

Through the Telescope is a picture book poem that is a joy to read aloud. Author Charles R. Smith, Jr.’s text is warm and wonderous; full of facts and joy. Smith’s use of phrasing is superb, and each word is meticulously planned.

Artist Evening Monteiro’s magical illustrations are full of movement and awe. His use of perspective and light are beautiful.

Through the Telescope is a great choice for kids who love space, especially future astronauts who feel the same way Mae did as a child.
