Monarch and Mourning Cloak is a lovely look at butterflies

Monarch and Mourning Cloak: A Butterfly Journal, by Melissa Stewart, Sarah S. Brannen, Beach Lane Books, March 3, 2026, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

Follow the lifecycles of two very different butterflies in Monarch and Mourning Cloak: A Butterfly Journal, by Melissa Stewart, Sarah S. Brannen.

Monarch and mourning cloak butterflies may seem similar on the surface; they are about the same size and common throughout North America. But following along at a butterfly’s-eye-view, readers will discover how they live in different habitats, eat different foods, and have different strategies for avoiding enemies and making it through winter. Because even though all butterflies have the same basic body features and life cycle, each species has its own special way of surviving. —Synopsis provided by Beach Lane Books

Presented in journal format, Monarch and Mourning Cloak invites readers into nature through poetry and beautiful illustrations.

Author Melissa Stewart’s journal entries come in the form of short, accessible poems and occasional side notes. Stewart’s poetry is full of energy and expression, creating visuals throughout.

Artist Sarah S. Brannen’s watercolor, pen and pencil illustrations bring even the smallest details to life. The balance between anatomical and ethereal is just right, capturing their development from egg to flight.

Extensive backmatter includes a more comprehensive look at butterflies, their habits and lifecycles as well as more information about journaling and creating a sketchbook

Monarch and Mourning Cloak is a well-researched nonfiction picture book that’s a good choice moving into spring.
