Goldfinches is beautiful celebration of poetry, nature

By Jessica on March 27, 2026 ages 4 & up, picture books, Poetry Month, seasonal

GOLDFINCHES, by Mary Oliver and Melissa Sweet, Viking Books for Young Readers, March 3, 2026, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)

Melissa Sweet illustrates the work of Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Mary Oliver for the first time in picture book form with Goldfinches.

Have you heard them singing in the wind, above the final fields?
Have you ever been so happy in your life?

Mary Oliver, winner of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, is one of America’s most beloved poets. Introducing her unforgettable words to children for the very first time, her poem “Goldfinches” joyfully observes the power of the natural world as only Mary Oliver can.

In conjunction with mixed-media artwork of Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet, Goldfinches fills the reader with wonder for the beauty around them and gratitude for the ability to bear witness to it. —Synopsis provided by Viking Books for Young Readers

Goldfinches is the celebration of the written word in conjunction with visual art. Melissa Sweet fell in love with Mary Oliver’s poetry because, she says in her endnote, “Oliver’s poems make me feel as if I’m in the natural world with her.” And with Sweet’s illustrations, young readers are transported to the natural world with the creators.

Oliver’s joyful prose is echoed in Sweet’s vibrant illustrations. It’s a pleasure to read aloud and would be a lovely addition to a classroom or personal study of birds, nature or poetry.
