Kobi Yamada’s Others: A Story of All of Us is thoughtful picture book

OTHERS: A STORY FOR ALL OF US, by Kobi Yamada and Charles Santoso, Ten Speed Young Readers, March 31, 2026, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)

Two boys wonder what other people are like in Others: A Story for All of Us, a picture book by Kobi Yamada and Charles Santoso.

You have to wonder what they’re thinking. The other people.
They’re not from here. They’re over there.
    They’re different.

Standing by the hedge that divides them, two children wonder what the people on the opposite side are like. They’re not like us, one child insists. The other child wonders: How are they different? Can they fly? Do they have tentacles? Are they machines? Or are they human? And if they are, do they think and feel? Maybe, just maybe, the people here and the people there are not so different after all. —Synopsis provided by Ten Speed Young Readers

Others features a simple concept, but it packs a big message. It hits on how basic assumptions made before meeting others can color how people see them way before they ever meet. Author Kobi Yamada gently leads readers through the concept with humor and heart. And artist Charles Santoso utilizes white space, color and some silliness to bring the concept home.

Others is a beautiful story of connection and kind-heartedness. It’s visually compelling and a delight to read.
