Jasmine Warga’s Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan is moving tale of friendship

By Jessica on March 4, 2026 ages 7 & up, ages 8 & up, Middle Grade

THE UNLIKELY TALE OF CHASE AND FINNEGAN, by Jasmine Warga, Balzer + Bray, March 3, 2026, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 8-12)

The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan, by Jasmine Warga, follows a dog and cheetah as they build a friendship and find peace.

Finnegan is a rescue dog with a broken heart.

Chase is a newly orphaned cheetah cub.

The two animals couldn’t be more different. But one day, they are brought together for the unlikeliest of reasons: Finnegan must help Chase gain the confidence she needs to perform as part of an educational program for children at a zoo.

Finnegan and Chase have each suffered losses and have trouble trusting. Yet somehow, they are just what the other needs. But if Finnegan isn’t able to help Chase overcome her fears, he won’t just be letting Chase down―he could be risking his new home as well. —Synopsis provided by Balzer + Bray

Inspired by true stories from zoos across the country, The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan is a tender story of friendship.

The story unfolds from the alternating viewpoints of Chase and Finnegan as they both work through feelings of fear, abandonment, anxiety, trauma, trust, love and the changing nature of friendship. Jasmine Warga captures each animal with clarity. Their unique personalities and voices ring true.

Animal stories are an easy entry point for readers, and The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan is a great example of that. Short chapters and accessible text are paired with charming illustrations sprinkled here and there. It’s a warm read that will appeal to less enthusiastic readers as well as seasoned ones.

The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan is a fast-paced read that will resonate with readers. It’s a good choice for the classroom or home.
