We the People Is All the People celebrates diversity

WE THE PEOPLE IS ALL THE PEOPLE, by Howard W. Reeves and Duncan Tonatiuh, Harry N. Abrams, April 28, 2026, Hardcover, $19.99 (ages 4-8)

We the People Is All the People, by Howard W. Reeves and illustrated by Duncan Tonatiuh, explores what the preamble to our United States constitution leaves unsaid.

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union . . .

Who are the “we the people” mentioned in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution? They are our neighbors next door, down the street, or across the country. They live in different places, worship in different ways, come from different backgrounds and histories. They struggle, achieve, and overcome. They are you, and me, and us.

Because, as we strive to create a more perfect union, “we” should mean “all.”

This picture book celebration of the best of America includes the preamble to the United States Constitution as well as notes from the author and artist.

As we enter the United States’ 250th year, lots of people are turning back to our nation’s founding documents in celebration.

We the People is All the People is one such celebration. In it, author Howard R. Reeves explores the “We” in We the People from the preamble to the U.S. Constitution through the lens of community and caring. Reeves believes the “We” is all-encompassing, no matter a person’s color, religion, abilities or age.

Illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh builds on the idea of We = All by focusing on diversity and highlighting the faces of the many. This stylized art is inspired from “different painters, muralists, and street artists” and from the people he’s seen and met while traveling across the country. This emphasis on people is particularly striking.

In We the People Is All the People, readers learn that patriotism often comes through love and support of all the people who make our country special.
