Niki Smith’s Midsummer Sisters thoughtfully explores family dynamics

MIDSUMMER SISTERS, by Niki Smith, Graphix, June 2, 2026, Hardcover, $25.99, Paperback, $14.99 (ages 9-12)

Stepsisters find themselves watching over a wild foal during a summer of change in Midsummer Sisters, a contemporary graphic novel by Niki Smith.

Kenzie and Quinn aren’t just stepsisters ― they’re best friends. They’re spending the summer with their grandmother, kayaking in the marshy coastal islands she calls home. The Outer Banks are also home to a herd of wild ponies, and the girls fall in love with a fragile newborn foal that they name Starling.

But even blue skies and sandy beaches can’t distract from what’s going on back home. Things between their parents aren’t the way they used to be, and the constant fights have left Kenzie and Quinn anxious and confused. They can’t remember a time when they weren’t a family. If their parents divorce and Quinn and her mom move away, will they even still be sisters . . . or will they be nothing?

As their world shifts around them, the girls swear to do the one thing they can: keep Starling safe. —Synopsis provided by Graphix

Midsummer Sisters is a thoughtful graphic novel that explores family dynamics on a number of levels.

Nikki Smith’s depiction of a marriage falling apart is gut-wrenching and authentic. As are the host of feelings Kenzie and Quinn must work through. But despite their turmoil, the sisters find wonder and peace as they spend the summer with their grandmother. And their grandmother is a breath of fresh air — she is the calm presence that helps positive change occur.

The Outer Banks come to life in Smith’s talented hands. The setting is beautiful, and its juxtaposition with home life echoes themes within the book. Readers of all backgrounds will enjoy the wild ponies. And all of Smith’s illustrations are well-developed and expressive.

Midsummer Sisters moves quickly. It’s a book that will resonate with readers who have experienced divorce, but those who have not will also find it informative. It’s a strong story, perfect for the summer.
