Nonfiction Wild Moon explores lunar phases

WILD MOON: HOW THE LUNAR PHASES LIGHT UP OUR WORLD, by Andie Powers and Lucy Rose, Gibbs Smith, Sept. 16, 2025, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 3-7)

Wild Moon, by Andie Powers and Lucy Rose, features the eight lunar phases of the moon and how they affect wildlife on Earth.

Some of Earth’s most extraordinary creatures have fascinating connections to our elegant and mysterious friend, the Moon. Did you know that the low glow of a waxing crescent moon helps dung beetles scurry home? Or that coral spawns when the Moon is full?

Wild Moon sheds light on the behavior of some of the Earth’s most extraordinary creatures in this whimsical nonfiction picture book. —Synopsis provided by Gibbs Smith

Told from the perspective of the moon, Wild Moon, takes readers into the wilds as it describes how different phases impact creatures around the world.

Wild Moon is almost a tale of two stories. On the one hand, you have the Moon’s lyrical narrative that offers broader information and sets the tone. Secondary text in smaller, italicized font goes into further detail. The two “tales” allow for growth on the part of the reader. The book actually grows with them.

Author Andie Powers provides just the right number of facts through inviting text that makes you want to read more. The science is accessible and strong backmatter provides clear information on moon phases and full-moon names.

Illustrator Lucy Rose’s luminous artwork captures life against the changing light. Her use of color and overall composition are perfectly in sync with the text.

Wild Moon is a beautiful nonfiction picture book perfect for classroom learning or bedtime reading.
