Eloy Moreno’s Invisible is powerful look at bullying, mental health

By Jessica on August 4, 2026 ages 10 & up, ages 12-14, Middle Grade, young adult

INVISIBLE, by Eloy Moreno, Sourcebooks Young Readers, Aug. 4, 2026, Hardcover, $16.99, Paperback, $8.99 (ages 10-13)

When a 13-year-old boy is bullied at school, he discovers an ability to disappear in Invisible, by Eloy Moreno.

“…I decided to find a new power, one so great they wouldn’t be able to hurt me at all. And I finally found it.”

    “Which power was that?”

“I have the power to make myself invisible.”

A boy wakes up in a hospital room with no memory of how he got there.

As time passes, the pieces of what happened that fateful day start falling into place, and the boy remembers his secret: he has the power to become invisible.

But the boy is hesitant to tell anyone the truth. What will they think of him if they find out the reason he gained this ability? And what if it makes everything worse? —Synopsis provided by Sourcebooks Young Readers

First published in Spanish in 2018 and adapted into a Disney Plus series in 2024, Eloy Moreno’s Invisible is now available in English. This heart-breaking book explores bullying and mental health.

The story unfolds piece-by-piece from the alternating perspectives of the boy, his friends, his parents, his teacher, and his bully.

The idea of Invisible is compelling on its own, but Moreno pushes beyond the obvious, humanizing each character, even the bully, as they grapple with their individual roles in the story. It isn’t an apologetic portrayal but painfully realistic.

Everyone feels invisible at some point in their life. In big and small moments, the idea of being shrouded from the world can be overwhelming. It’s a universal feeling readers will understand.

Moreno’s writing is profoundly moving. His chapters are brief and hard hitting. His tone commands attention with a layer of compassion laced throughout.

Moreno doesn’t give readers full answers to any of the questions he poses or situations he explores. He leaves readers room to consider; to think within in the confines of Invisible and the world beyond.

Invisible is one of the stronger novels I’ve read this year.
