Golden Boy is a standalone contemporary YA novel with a lot of heart.
The story follows Emma, a smart and ambitious teen who can’t wait until she gets to move away from her small town and her football-loving brothers and father. Since her mom died, Emma has learned to be independent, and that independence has come with a lot of heartache. But through everything, Hudson has been by her side.
Author A. J. Symon has done an admirable job developing Emma. She’s a well-thought-out main character who is easy to root for. The standout character, however, isn’t Emma. It’s Hudson. Despite all that goes on with Hudson, he’s an uncomplicated guy. He loves to run and play ball He’s unwavering in his friendship and loyalty. And there’s a joy to Hudson that practically jumps off the page.
Supporting characters range from somewhat complicated to predictable and everything in between.
In Golden Boy, Symon has crafted a likeable story with humor laced throughout. It’s fast-paced and leaves you with a smile.
