There’s a reason why The Baby-sitter’s Club has been around for 40 years. In 1986, author Ann M. Martin created a series that spoke to girls from all walks of life. Her stories centered of friendship, family, resilience end entrepreneurship. Each character stood out in her own way while remaining relatable in realistic situations.
As a fan of the series when I was a middle-grader, I can’t remember anything more exciting than an upcoming BSC Super Special. The books were longer. The adventures bigger. And there were more perspectives. Instead of focusing on one baby-sitter, the books featured all of them. My favorite was No. 7, Snowbound.
Fast forward a lot of years, and my 12-year-old is just on the edge of aging out of BSC, but still very much enjoys the graphic novels. In fact, she took my advanced copy of Baby-sitters on Board! and wouldn’t give it back. It took searching her room during the school day to find it, and the copy is well-worn and well-loved.
In Baby-sitters on Board! Raina Telgemeier and Gale Galligan have brought the adventure to life. They’ve stayed true to source material while making the story fresh and exciting for a new generation of readers. Their energetic illustrations fit perfectly with these beloved characters.
