Who Knows the Way to Mr. Grimly’s Classroom? one of 2026’s best picture books

WHO KNOWS THE WAY TO MR. GRIMLY’S CLASSROOM? by Chris Priestley and Mariachiara Di Giorgio, Candlewick, Sept. 1, 2026, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 4-8)

A girl sets out to return a book to a teacher in Who Knows the Way to Mr. Grimly’s Classroom? by Chris Priestley and Mariachiara Di Giorgio.

When Miss Flytrap asks if anyone knows the way to Mr. Grimly’s classroom, Grace’s hand flies up—she can’t help herself, even though she’s a new kid in school and has no idea where to go.

Nonetheless, with a book to deliver proudly in hand, Grace sets off on a long, strange journey through a very odd place, full of twists, turns, and creepy characters who give puzzling directions.

Climbing dark, cobwebby staircases, feeling her way through a fogged-up playground, careening by zipline from the top of a treacherous tower right into a kitchen window—will she ever find Mr. Grimly’s classroom? —Synopsis provided by Candlewick

If Alfred Hitchcock and Edward Gorey got together and made a children’s book, Who Knows the Way to Mr. Grimly’s Classroom? would be a likely outcome. This delightful, gothic picture book is full of atmosphere, mystery, suspense and a touch of humor that makes it a joy to read.

Author Chris Priestley’s story unfolds with expert pacing and little gems that make you smile dropped throughout. Kids will appreciate the repeated “that happened so Grace did this” pattern as well as Grace’s persistence accomplishing her task.

Artist Mariachiara Di Giorgio’s watercolor, gouache and colored pencil illustrations are beautifully rendered. Each image is one readers will want to spend time exploring. They are the perfect complement to Priestley’s text, providing a sense of scope. Di Giorgio’s use of light and shadows further enhances the atmosphere.

Who Knows the Way to Mr. Grimly’s Classroom? is one of those books that will be read repeatedly. It’s one of my favorite picture books this year.
