Get to know firefighting vehicles in Flash, the Little Fire Engine

Flash, the Little Fire EngineFLASH, THE LITTLE FIRE ENGINE, by Pam Calvert and Jen Taylor, Two Lions, Nov. 5, 2019, Hardcover, $17.99 (ages 3-6)

There are a few things you can be sure kids will be interested in — dinosaurs, dolls, flowers, bugs, cars and trucks. Flash, The Little Fire Engine written by Pam Calvert and illustrated by Jen Taylor celebrates one of the most revered trucks, a fire engine.

Little Flash has been cleared to help in town and can’t wait to make a difference. But every time the bell rings and flash zooms to the rescue, he’s either too little, too short or too late. Just when Flash is starting to feel like no one will ever need him, he finds himself in a position to save the day.

Flash, The Little Fire Engine is a bright, bold book that’s fun to read aloud: “Weeoo! Weeoo! Honk! Honk!” The pictures are engaging and introduce kids to different kinds of firefighting vehicles. Flash is a sweet little character that young children who “want to help” will relate to.

This book comes with a caveat. I read it to my 5-year-old having only flipped through it beforehand. That was a big mistake as it introduced some new and scary concepts to her like the possibility of an airplane catching fire. This book should definitely be purchased based on your individual child’s sensitivity level.
