First published in Spanish in 2018 and adapted into a Disney Plus series in 2024, Eloy Moreno’s Invisible is now available in English. This heart-breaking book explores bullying and mental health.
The story unfolds piece-by-piece from the alternating perspectives of the boy, his friends, his parents, his teacher, and his bully.
The idea of Invisible is compelling on its own, but Moreno pushes beyond the obvious, humanizing each character, even the bully, as they grapple with their individual roles in the story. It isn’t an apologetic portrayal but painfully realistic.
Everyone feels invisible at some point in their life. In big and small moments, the idea of being shrouded from the world can be overwhelming. It’s a universal feeling readers will understand.
Moreno’s writing is profoundly moving. His chapters are brief and hard hitting. His tone commands attention with a layer of compassion laced throughout.
Moreno doesn’t give readers full answers to any of the questions he poses or situations he explores. He leaves readers room to consider; to think within in the confines of Invisible and the world beyond.
Invisible is one of the stronger novels I’ve read this year.
