    A. J. Symon’s joyful Golden Boy is full of laughter, heart

GOLDEN BOY, by A. J. Symon, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Aug. 25, 2026, Hardcover, $19.99 (young adult)

A girl’s life changes forever when she accidentally transforms her golden retriever into a human in Golden Boy, by A. J. Symon.

Science-obsessed, teen-genius Emma Branch is used to being the odd one out—in her family, among her classmates, and in her small town that only ever seems to care about football. She doesn’t mind being all alone; in fact, she prefers it. Besides, who needs friends when she has a best friend already—her golden retriever, Hudson.

But when Hudson gets into an accident, Emma can’t bear to lose her only friend. Luckily, she’s been working on an experimental substance for her school science project that could help him out. All it was supposed to do was heal Hudson, not…turn him human?!

Emma, her family, and the whole town is about to learn just how a golden retriever can change hearts and minds for the better—that is, after causing a big, old mess first. —Synopsis provided by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Golden Boy is a standalone contemporary YA novel with a lot of heart.

The story follows Emma, a smart and ambitious teen who can’t wait until she gets to move away from her small town and her football-loving brothers and father. Since her mom died, Emma has learned to be independent, and that independence has come with a lot of heartache. But through everything, Hudson has been by her side.

Author A. J. Symon has done an admirable job developing Emma. She’s a well-thought-out main character who is easy to root for. The standout character, however, isn’t Emma. It’s Hudson. Despite all that goes on with Hudson, he’s an uncomplicated guy. He loves to run and play ball He’s unwavering in his friendship and loyalty. And there’s a joy to Hudson that practically jumps off the page.

Supporting characters range from somewhat complicated to predictable and everything in between.

In Golden Boy, Symon has crafted a likeable story with humor laced throughout. It’s fast-paced and leaves you with a smile.
