The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield is the fifth book in Claudia Gray’s Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series. The previous books are The Murder of Mr. Wickham, The Late Mrs. Willoughby, The Perils of Lady Catherine De Bourgh, and The Rushworth Family Plot. The entire series is a lot of fun.
In this latest offering, Darcy and Elizabeth’s rown son, and Catherine Morland and Henry Tilney’s grown daughter are guests of Jane and Charles Bingley who now have grown children of their own. Caroline Bingley Allerdyce is once again plotting a way into Pemberly, and Jonathan’s parents are as set as ever against a match between Jonathan and Juliet.
This series is one that should be read in order, as Juliet and Jonathan’s story plays out across the books. And there’s a lovely cliffhanger at the end of The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield that sets up what is sure to be an enjoyable final book.
The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield and the rest of the books in this series work so well because of Gray’s love for the source material. She builds on Jane Austen’s characters while crafting an entirely new story at the same time. Her tone is in keeping with source material and her plot moves at a pleasant pace.
While not specifically a young adult novel, The Fatal Unpleasantness at Netherfield is an enjoyable mystery perfect for Jane Austen fans of any age. The Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series is a great option for summer reading.
