World around us comes alive with sound in ‘Squeak, Rumble, Whomp!’

By Jessica on October 30, 2012 ages 3 & up, picture books

“SQUEAK, RUMBLE, WHOMP! WHOMP! WHOMP!: A SONIC ADVENTURE, by Wynton Marsalis and Paul Rogers, Candlewick Press, Oct. 9, 2012, hardcover $15.99 (ages 3 and up)

A back door squeeeaks as a nosy mouse eeeks and a saxophone speeeeaks. Big trucks rrrrumble while hunger makes tummies grrrumble and the big bas drum goes bum brrrum brrrumble. The world around us is filled with music. From the whomping of the tuba to the chrrrick of buttering toast, all you need to do is listen for it.

All these sounds and many more are explored in “Squeak, Rumble, Whimp! Whomp Whomp!” It’s second collaboration by world-renowned jazz musician and composer Wynton Marsalis and acclaimed illustrator Paul Rogers. Their first book together was “Jazz ABZ: An A to Z Collection of Jazz Portraits with Art Print.”

This new creation begs to be read aloud, the words rolling off the reader’s tongue. Great typography paired with exuberant illustrations and rollicking text makes this an interactive book children will enjoy both on their own and with help from a more advanced reader.
