WHEN GEORGE WASHINGTON BOWED TO THE NEW NATION, by Barbara Carroll Roberts and Anne Yvonne Gilbert, Creative Editions, Aug. 11, 2026, Hardcover, $18.99 (ages 8 and up)
When George Washington Bowed to the New Nation, by Barbara Carroll Roberts and Anne Yvonne Gilbert, follows Washington’s actions directly after the Revolutionary War.
As commanding general of the Continental Army, George Washington was one of the most celebrated and recognizable figures of the American Revolution. So, it was a shock when he voluntarily resigned his commission, giving up a powerful position instead of seeking to capitalize upon it.
In Barbara Carroll Roberts’s carefully researched account, young readers will encounter a nuanced portrayal of Washington and his contemporaries during a moment that would influence the course of a young nation and lead to the creation of a representative democracy of, by, and for the people. —Synopsis provided by Creative Editions
When George Washington Bowed to the Nation is an ode to the ideals America was built upon. It follows Washington as he makes the change from general to citizen.
Author Barbara Carroll Roberts has distilled a lot of history into a clear and compelling — if not a little romanticized — account. Her writing is warm and welcoming.
Colored pencil illustrations by Anne Yvonne Gilbert are the book’s greatest selling point. Her textured drawings practically command you to stop and explore every detail.
Backmatter includes more on why it took so long for the war to end and hat etiquette. Information on Washington’s position as a slaveholder is an excellent addition and helps humanize Washington, flaws and all.
While the publisher’s suggested age range for When George Washington Bowed to the Nation is 9 and up, it will appeal to listeners as young as 6 or 7 and should be accessible to readers ages 8 and up. It’s a great choice as we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.
